Wow, you bought the game and you didn't know about the 3 install DRM ?
its a stupid method by which EA have tried to prevent pirated copies of Spore from being released, which was quite stupid as there were already copies on the torrents.
What it essentially does is limit your copy of spore from being installed more than 3 times, i.e if you reformat and need to reinstall, thats one of them used up.
After 3 installs you need to call up EA to purchase, thats right purchase the right to install the game again

didn't bioshock have something similar on it when it first came out?

They did.... In Spore patch 1.10 they upped the level of 3 installs to 5 nd plan to remove it alltoghether next patch.
