Ok the primary reason i want a laptop is for highend gaming on the move, now i know alot of laptops arnt compatible/ideal for gaming, would it be best to just get a custom built one or go for a certain brand and how much couold i expect to pay
well i haven't got much experience in laptops but... i heard theres some sweet nvidia laptop out at the moment, sadly this laptop costs shitloads.
my mate bought a pretty sweet custom Dell for 2k
or
you could go to ITwarehouse with a list of all the junk you want inside the laptop, they'll quote you, and you should have it within 2 weeks.
so go custom and you get a pretty sweet deal, most stock bought PC's are limited to being shithouse office work and media center stuff (unless you know where to look).
anyway the price you'd be looking at for a gaming laptop nowadays would be be anywhere from $1600-$3000 depending on what stuff you want in your laptop.
Its not "custom" as you call it, its just configured differently.
VX, have you considered a Mac or a PC?
If PC, then a dell XPS is definatley worth a look. (1530 that is.) Also there is a new HP laptop out that is also good value for the performance. Asus...they're ok, stay away from Compaq and IBM and Toshiba, gaming isn't their thing.
If Mac, MacBook Pro 15.4", always good, though a little on the pricey side.
NOTE: When choosing a laptop for gaming, always look to see that it has a graphics card, most laptops don't and this fucks up any game, it can't run. So watch out.
Hope this is a help.

if you want to get technical Chris, PC is Mac. PC = Personal Computer. and despite what people say Mac is actually classed as a computer these days.
get a Mac and install XP on it. why? cause Mac have decent hardware nowadays, but shit software and compatibility. Mac's OS is intended mainly for business and Media, Itunes is "the shit". aside from that they just look friggin spectacular.
imo, if you want to run alot of games (obviously) get any "PC" as long as it has awesome hardware, and a Windows OS on it.
Anti-Virus:
DON'T get any of the following Anti-Virus programs, they are known NOT to work and slow your computer down epically.
Norton
Trend-Micro
(these 2 have massive updates, they slow your computer down massively, and i know that they are pretty unreliable)
DO get one of the following:
AVG (i have this one, small updates, uses the smallest bit of RAM, extremely reliable)
McAfee (I've heard its pretty good, extremely reliable)
obviously if you are going to run a Mac OS, you will not need to worry about viruses quite as much because nobody actually uses Mac, nobody bothers to create viruses for them, i still recommend using Anti-Virus software though.
well thats my opinion on OS systems anyway.

there are plenty of working viruses for mac (they have to be designed in a different way to windows since Apple OS is essentially just a direct Linux distro) its just that they cant be propogated through the internet as quickly because there are less people running Apple than running XP.
Well with my experince with dell, hp and acer i am not even going to boher looking at them, i would be running windows, preferably vista, im willing to spend about 5k on an 'exclusive' high end gaming rig, no emails, office work etc, its just gunna be for entertainment. I did have a look at alienware today and was impressed, and a freind of mine also pointed me to asus website - im still poking around it.
I'll go have a look at Itwarehouse website now, see what i can find. And another question sorry, are laptops normally more pricer than PC's?

depending on what you want they can be. this is normally because they are packing a bunch of shit into the one thing, and it comes with a monitor. TBH, a lot of the stock stuff is disgusting, although improving HEAPS over previous years. If your willing to blow 5K on a machine, do yourself a favour and get a nice custom rig setup
Cheers, thanks for the tips
don't bother with a Mac; over priced for the hardware you can get in an equivalent notebook.
5k is more than sufficient for specced out notebook for gaming.
Get quotes from Dell & Alienware for your custom specs.
Alienware are owned by Dell but expect to pay a premium as they're catering for a niche market.
But keep in mind, the more powerful your notebook is, the more juice it will use.
9 cell batteries are the way to go if you're serious about portability, but even then they're limited in life under heavy load
